Additional learning support

At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. Support can begin at any stage of school.

At Glenfield Public School, we understand that every child learns in their own way. If you are concerned about your child’s learning, behaviour or development, we encourage you to reach out to their classroom teacher as the first step. Together, we follow a clear learning and support flow chart that ensures no child is overlooked.

Teachers begin by observing and recording your child’s progress over time and adjusting classroom programs with targeted strategies. If further support is needed, your child’s case may be referred to our Learning and Support Team (LaST). This team works closely with you, your child’s teacher and specialist staff to develop tailored plans such as a Personalised Learning and Support Plan (PLaSP) or Individual Behaviour Support Plan (IBSP).

Where necessary, additional services - such as the school counsellor, speech pathology or occupational therapy - may be involved. Parents are an important part of every step, with regular opportunities for collaboration and review.

Our aim is to create a supportive, consistent approach that addresses your child’s unique needs and ensures they are known, valued and cared for at school.

Concerned about your child’s learning or development?

Step 1: Parent Meeting and Parent Referral Form

The first step in the Learning and Support process is a meeting with your child’s teacher and a member of the school leadership team. During this meeting, a Parent Referral to the Learning and Support Team (LaST) form  will be completed. This form helps us gather background information about your child and gives us a starting point for planning support.

Step 2: Initial Support and Medical Referrals

After the parent referral, your child’s teacher will begin working closely with the Learning and Support Team to provide classroom adjustments and monitor progress. At this stage, we encourage parents to make an appointment with their GP. Your GP can provide referrals to specialists such as paediatricians, speech pathologists or occupational therapists. These services can work alongside the school to provide a clearer picture of your child’s learning needs. Please note that private tutoring is not considered a therapeutic support.

Step 3: Teacher Referral to the Learning and Support Team

Once a period of observation and classroom interventions has taken place, the teacher may complete a Teacher Referral to the Learning and Support Team. This referral is raised at the Learning and Support Team meeting, where a group of staff discuss the best way forward. Feedback from the meeting is always provided to the referring teacher and outcomes are shared with parents.

Step 4: Parent Release of Information Form

If further support is required, you may be asked to complete a Parent Release of Information form. This form allows us to gather important details about the specialists your child is working with, such as doctors, paediatricians, speech pathologists or other health services. It also gives us permission to contact these professionals so we can build a complete picture of your child’s needs and ensure a consistent approach.

Step 5: School Counsellor Involvement

If the school counsellor is engaged to support your child, an additional School Counsellor Consent form  will be provided. Please note that any forms, assessments or questionnaires from external providers require the Parent Release of Information to be completed first. This step ensures that all professionals involved in your child’s care can effectively work together.

External Assessments

We strongly recommend seeking external assessments early, as waiting lists for paediatricians, speech pathologists and occupational therapists can be lengthy. Our school supports over 400 students and while we work hard to respond to each child’s needs, students are prioritised based on urgency. External assessments help us fast-track understanding and ensure your child receives timely support.
